The Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Arbërie Nagavci, has participated in the launch of the campaign “Let’s have fun with children”, in the framework of marking the International Day of the Girl Child, with the theme “Empowering girls through education: Eliminating the phenomenon of selective abortion”, organized by UNFPA and IPKO Foundation.
On this occasion, Minister Nagavci said that the best way to fight gender inequalities is through education and training, because providing the right support for girls today provides society with strong women tomorrow.
Minister Nagavci also emphasized that, regarding the institutional actions to guarantee these rights, the Government of Kosovo and the Ministry of Education continuously adhere to the international principles of human rights in general, and the rights of girls and women in particular.
“Since taking office, we have provided and continue to provide increased support for girls at school and during their studies. Concretely, yesterday we opened the week for the promotion of health, with a focus on sexual education in schools, with special attention to girls”, said Nagavci.
Among other things, Minister Nagavci also spoke about educational policies in support of young girls who study in fields traditionally dominated by boys and the distribution of scholarships, a policy which has influenced the increase in the participation of girls at the University of Pristina in these areas. to the extent of 50%, when in the countries of the European Union it is only 17%.
Speaking about the challenges faced by girls, Minister Nagavci mentioned the impossibility of completing basic education, lack of access to modern technology, unlike boys, experiencing physical or sexual violence from a partner at least once in their life, etc.
The Minister of Health, Arben Vitia, the United Nations Development Coordinator in Kosovo, Arnhild Spence, the head of the UNFPS Office, also spoke about the importance of eliminating inequality between girls and boys through education and building a healthy society in Kosova, Visare Mujko Nimani and the director of IPKO Foundation, Abetare Gojani.
