The Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Taulant Kelmendi, hosted a meeting with the HANDIKOS project manager, Nora Simitçiu, the HANDIKOS project assistant, Arbnora Fetahu, a representative of the Parents’ Advocacy Group, as well as five children from the HënaAdvocacy Group.
This meeting discussed the engagement of assistants for children with disabilities, teaching methodology (individual plans), terminology in schools and infrastructural access in schools.
During the meeting, Deputy Minister Kelmendi emphasized that the Ministry of Education is in a continuous process of reviewing textbooks, where after the findings, any discriminatory terminology for any community is eliminated. Also, every infrastructure investment of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo meets the standards for access by persons with disabilities. Kelmendi added that in the Education Strategy, as well as in the budget allocations, we have dedicated a special budget for the employment of assistants for children with special educational needs, with the plan to employ 500 such assistants, and their recruitment process should be carried out through the municipalities.
Meanwhile, the head of the HANDIKOS Parents’ Advocacy Group, Afërdita Gashi, emphasized that this group operates within HANDIKOS, where it advocates and lobbies for their rights in the fields of health, education, social services, and public and educational integration.
The joint commitment was to advance cooperation between institutions and organizations for inclusive education. It is in the social interest that no child be denied the right to education, regardless of their abilities.
