The Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) announces that the first results of the Teaching and Learning International Survey – TALIS 2024 have been published.
This is the first year that Kosovo participates in this international study, which included 55 education systems from around the world and aims to collect data on teaching, learning and working conditions of teachers and school principals.
In Kosovo, 3,281 teachers and 222 principals from lower secondary schools participated in this cycle, while the field survey was conducted during the period 15 March – 22 April 2024, through the online platform.
TALIS is the largest international survey that focuses on the experiences and perceptions of teachers and school principals, providing comparable data on teaching environments and professional development in education.
Key findings for Kosovo:
The average age of teachers in Kosovo is 44 years, almost the same as the OECD average (45). Around 60% are female, while 9% are under 30.
97% of teachers have participated in some form of professional training in the past 12 months, a higher percentage than the OECD average (91%). However, only 28% have attended training that includes the use of digital technology in teaching.
97% of teachers in Kosovo say they teach students how to use the information they have learned and 90% to solve real-world problems – figures higher than the OECD average.
82% of teachers regularly share teaching materials with colleagues, while 64% discuss student performance, an indicator of a positive collaborative climate.
96% of principals participate directly in teaching management processes, much higher than the OECD average (76%), however only 48% are involved in long-term strategic planning.
85% of teachers feel fulfilled in their work and 77% think that the teaching profession is valued by society, a higher percentage than the OECD average (67%).
The TALIS 2024 results provide valuable insight for improving professional development policies, digital inclusion, strengthening the role of principals, and increasing the status of the teaching profession in society.
MESTI will use these findings to design new training programs and advance the implementation of quality standards in the Kosovo education system.
