The acting Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Arbërie Nagavci, together with the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Graçanica, Leutrim Ajeti, visited today the family of student Gj.T., following reports of the denial of the right to education.
During the visit, Minister Nagavci and municipal representatives spoke with the student’s mother, Ana Trajković, who said that the child had been treated inappropriately by the school because his family had a house built by the Government of the Republic of Kosovo.
She announced that during the past year the boy had also faced unacceptable treatment from the school principal and staff, as well as refusal by his peers to associate with him. After reporting the case, Trajković announced that the child has returned to the learning process today.
Minister Nagavci welcomed the student’s return to school and asked the school principal to ensure his full inclusion in learning and in all school activities, in accordance with the standards of inclusive education and the obligations arising from Kosovo legislation and international conventions on children’s rights.
Minister Nagavci emphasized that any attempt to hinder or prevent children from exercising their right to education, a right guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo, the Law on Pre-University Education and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, is deeply concerning.
Minister Nagavci also announced that, according to information received from the parent, the child is currently allowed to attend classes, but throughout the past year has encountered obstacles and concerns in the learning process.
For this reason, at her request, education inspectors conducted a visit to the school today, in order to assess the situation from an institutional perspective and obtain the school’s version of the case.
Minister Nagavci reiterated that the Ministry of Education remains fully committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of ethnicity or background, has equal and safe access to education, is protected from any form of discrimination, and is guaranteed a healthy, inclusive, and dignified environment. She called on local authorities to take all necessary steps to ensure that such cases do not recur and that every child in the Republic of Kosovo is treated with justice and fairness.
