Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Shyqiri Bytyqi, participated in the promotion of the Teachers Manual "Prevention of violent extremism" prepared by MEST with the assistance of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the European Foundation for Democracy (FED) as well as with the financial support of the Embassy of Italy in Kosova.
Minister Bytyqi on this occasion stressed that the importance of education in the field of preventing violent extremism is not solely defined by the Kosova Government Strategy for the Prevention of Violent Extremism and Radicalization that leads to Terrorism 2015/20, but has been advanced by the UN best practices and other international practices for building youth protection against violent extremist ideologies.
Minister Bytyqi said that this handbook aims to provide technical guidance to teachers throughout Kosova on addressing concrete challenges driven by violent extremism in our schools. “Education plays an important role in preventing radicalism, promoting the development of critical thinking skills by students, building trust and vital skills and seeing the vote from the perspective of a global citizen. The Manual is one of several activities that MEST has initiated to achieve the objectives set out in the Strategy for the Prevention of Violent Extremism and Radicalization that leads to Terrorism, "said Minister Bytyqi.
Minister Bytyqi thanked UNDP and FED for assistance that today we have a manual which would help teachers to have the first steps towards young people in stopping violent extremism
Italy's ambassador to Kosova, Piero Cristoforo Sardi, said that combating violent extremism and countering terrorism is one of the major challenges of our time, and as such require enormous attention and should be dealt with relevantly through various strategies for preventing and combating extremism.
Meanwhile, UNDP representative Ulrika Richardson spoke of the importance of the manual and the importance of its implementation in schools so that our youths be informed of the dangers that lead to extremism and radicalism.
